Jeffery Cline Yates

            Jeffery Cline Yates, 51, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

            Jeffery was born May 12, 1960 in Alexandria, Virginia to Bobby Cline and Carol Joan (Rutherford) Yates.  He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during peace time.  Jeffery enjoyed fishing and bowling and loved animals, especially dogs, including “Topaz”, who was his special buddy.

            He is survived by one daughter, Amanda Yates of Frederickburg, Virginia; his mother, Carol Joan Yates Proffitt of Pembroke, North Carolina; three siblings, Tony Yates, Donna Dixon, both of Mansfield, and Robert Yates of Cleveland; nieces and nephews; girlfriend, Nicole Streff of Mansfield; special maternal aunt and uncle, Kelver and Sue Delaney of Mansfield; paternal aunt and uncle, Larry and Pauline Jones of Richmond, Virginia; paternal aunt, Anita Yates of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and very special friends, Harold and Harold “Dean” Brubaker.

            Jeffery was preceded in death by his father, Bobby C. Yates.

 Barbara Jean Butler

            Barbara Jean Butler, 54, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness.

            Barbara was born February 13, 1957 in Cleveland, Mississippi to the late JD Evans and Odella Childs Butler.  She was very kind and loving.  Barbara loved people, people loved her, and she would open her home to anyone. 

            She is survived by five children, Robert (Michelle) Butler, Kenneth (Shauita) Butler, Derrick Butler, Tammy Butler all of Mansfield, and Marshon Knox of Chicago, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren; one great grandchildren; four siblings, Ida Robinson of Cleveland, Mississippi, Chester (Gwen) Butler of Mansfield, Annie Walker of Cleveland, Mississippi, and James Butler of Waukgan, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

            Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by one brother, Dillard Butler.

            Private funeral service was held on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield.

 

 

Pearl “Mammy” Potter

                

            Pearl “Mammy” Potter, 76, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a brief illness.

            Pearl was born October 22, 1935 in Globe, Kentucky to Boston and Thelma (Snipes) Jordan.  She was the well-known owner of Potter’s Carry Out.  Mammy was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  She enjoyed her country home, birds, squirrels, and all other wildlife.  She especially enjoyed cooking and being with her family.

            She is survived by her loving husband, Kenny Potter; three children, Michael (Paula) Earlywine, Carolyn Sue (Joe) Noser, and Darlene (Harold) Smith; four step-children, Larry “Cooch” Potter, Steve “Pee Wee” Potter, Jeff “Butch” Potter, and Diana “Lynn” Geary; eight grandchildren, Mickey Smith, Mellissa VanPelt, Monica King, Candi Lykins, Tammy Owens, Billie Bland, Christopher Earlywine, and Amy Bricker; numerous step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and six siblings, Loyd Jordan, Verlon Jordan, Violet Gross, Elenora Preston, Jerald Jordan, and Donald Ray Jordan.

            Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; one step-son, Frank Potter; one grandson, Jason Akers; one brother, Kenneth Jordan; and one brother-in-law, Larry Gross.

  Richard L. Yoxtheimer

              

           Richard L. Yoxtheimer, 71, of Mansfield, passed Tuesday, January 24, 2012 following a brief illness.

            Richard was born February 10, 1940 in Lodi, Ohio to James and Marie (Whitmore) Yoxtheimer.  He attended Crossroads Community Church.  He was a mechanic, specializing in motorcycles and foreign vehicles, and had owned and operated several businesses over the years, including a Texaco station and Yamaha of Mansfield.  Richard had many passions in life.  He had a passion for motorcycles, enjoyed riding and racing them.  He was also passionate about his family, was an incredible father, grandfather, and friend.  He was a good provider for his family and had an excellent sense of humor.  He had achieved lifetime membership status with the American Motorcyclist Association and was a member of the NRA.

            He is survived by five children, Vicki (Jim) Smith, Sonya Steele, Jerilyn Dailey, Rich (Mary Jo) Yoxtheimer, and David “Rusty” (Gwyn) Yoxtheimer; eleven grandchildren, Jessica Yoxtheimer Lewis, Jeremiah Yoxtheimer, Cody Johnson, Nicholas and Patrick Yoxtheimer, Alex and Cassandra Dailey, Taylor and Blake Yoxtheimer, and Joel and Elise Yoxtheimer; nine great-grandchildren; mother of his children, Janice Tyson; one brother, James Yoxtheimer; one sister, Patricia Yoxtheimer-Gay; and many close and special lifelong friends.

            Richard was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Hodge Gay.

David Allan Purnell

            David Allan Purnell, 73, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly at his residence Saturday, January 21, 2012.

            David was born November 17, 1938 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Richard and Fern Ann (Binion) Thomas. He served in the U.S. Army during peace time and had worked as an over-the-road truck driver for many years.  David enjoyed going to church and often visited numerous churches in the area.  He enjoyed listening to music, especially gospel, folk and the blues.  He liked to keep up on motorcycle releases and watch car racing.

            He is survived by two children, John (Sharon) Purnell of Williamsport, Ohio and Elizabeth (Ronnie) Forehand of Dothan, Alabama; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Forehand of Bonafie, Florida.

            David was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Purnell; one son, Richard Purnell; one grandson, Damian Purnell; one sister, Charlotte Purnell; and one brother, Denzel Thomas.

            A memorial service was held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

           

 

 

Twyla H. Coutts Hyatt

            Twyla Harlene Coutts Hyatt, 74, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Kingston Nursing Home, following a brief illness.

            Twyla was born April 28, 1937 in Ashland to William F. and Loretta L. (Esbenshade) Coutts.  Twyla was married for 54 years to the love of her life, Thomas S. Hyatt, who preceded her in death on September 27, 2010.  She was known for her baking skills and loved to enter her baked goods at the fairs.  She had many blue ribbons for her pies and won every ribbon possible, including the grand champion ribbon.  She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. What was most important to Twyla was that she loved the Lord and loved to serve Him.  She also loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.  Her family and friends will greatly miss her. 

            She is survived by two children, Randal T. (Julie) Hyatt of Boise, Idaho and Darla (Stephan) Gilbert of Mansfield; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Heather Hyatt Taylor of Davenport, Iowa; one brother, Richard (Rose) Myers of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sisters, Virginia (Bruce) Edmonds of Mansfield and Janet Rea of Scottsdale, Arizona; and three sisters-in-law, Sara Kohler and Janet Lackey both of Estero, and Mariellen Theaker of Mansfield.

            Along with her husband and parents, Twyla was preceded in death by her son, Seth S. Hyatt.

Troy Lewellyn Hudson

            Troy Lewellyn Hudson, 48, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Cleveland Clinic following a short illness and a lifetime battle of diabetes.

            Troy was born April 21, 1963 in Mansfield to David Lee and Lois Jean (Rittenhouse) Hudson.  He enjoyed fishing and demolition derby, watching NASCAR, Ohio State, and the Cleveland Browns.  Troy loved to go to Wal-Mart; and his pride and joy was his children.

            He is survived by his three children, Shane (Lyanna) Hudson, Mandy Hudson, and Toryn Hudson all of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Baylee Hudson and one on the way; mother and step-father, Lois and Dick Ewing of Mansfield; three siblings, Connie (Doug) Boliantz, Todd (Teresa) Hudson, and Sherry (James) Hall all of Mansfield; many nieces and nephews; two special cousins, Ethel Price and Paul Litteral; and special friends, Tommy Dillon, Tim McCabe, and Troy McNair.

            Troy was preceded in death by his father, David Hudson; maternal grandparents, Homer and Minnie Rittenhouse; paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Betty Hudson; and infant brother, Davey Hudson.

            Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield.  Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., with calling one hour prior, on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church, 998 Laver Road, Mansfield, with Pastor Marcus Bailey officiating.  Burial will follow in Lantz Cemetery.

William “Butch” Alfred Williams

            William “Butch” Alfred Williams, 68, of Mansfield, passed away early Thursday, January 5, 2012, following a brief illness.

            Butch was born April 16, 1943 in Shelby to Jacob Burton and Leona (Burkett) Williams.  He proudly served his country in the Army and Navy during the Viet Nam Era and had later worked as a construction worker.

            He is survived by three daughters, Wendy (Ken) Zimmer of Galion, Michelle (Robert) Powell of Galion, and Tonia (Joe) Poth of Mansfield; five grandsons, Tyler (Brittany) Williams, Kevin Miracle, Jr., Zackery Miracle, Hunter Powell, and Colton McCleese; two great grandchildren, Kaylynn Williams and Christopher Williams; one brother, Jacob Williams of Mansfield; two step sisters, Joann and Wanda; and several nieces and nephews.

            Butch was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Christopher Williams; and one brother, James D. Williams.

            Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield.  Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor Russell Stanford officiating.  Full military honors will be performed by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.  Burial will be on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

 

 

 

Kenneth “Kenny” William Zellner

           Kenneth “Kenny” William Zellner, 65, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

            Kenny was born December 19, 1946 in Mansfield, Ohio to Forest and Grace (Au) Zellner.  He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, proudly serving his country during the Viet Nam War.  He married his sweetheart, Cheryl Bauer Zellner, on July 15, 1979.  Kenny retired from SARCA Manufacturing and was co-owner of Thunder Road Drive Thru. Kenny loved music and loved to sing. He had his own band, Dragonfly.  He also enjoyed boating, fishing, water skiing, bowling with his son, and delivering pizza to his customers.                                                

            Along with his wife, Kenny is survived by two sons, Ryan Zellner of Mansfield and Jeff (Monica) Zellner of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one daughter, Amy Kennel of Arizona; one granddaughter, Beth Zellner of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one brother, Gary (Nancy) Zellner of Mansfield; one sister, Karen Tackett of Mansfield; two brothers-in-law, Mike Bauer and Bill Bauer both of Mansfield; and two sisters-in-law, Cindy Rush of Mansfield and Kathy Maffett of Spring, Texas.

            Kenny was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jim Zellner.

            Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield.  Funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Don Cairnes officiating.  Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery with military honors performed by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.

Bruce L. Gruneisen

            

            Bruce L. Gruneisen, 91, of Mansfield, passed away December 31, 2011, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital, following a brief illness.

            Bruce was born December 27, 1920 in Mansfield to John J. and Ida May (Robinson) Gruneisen.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WW II.  He married his sweetheart, Eileen Heimberger Gruneisen on May 2, 1942, and she survives.  Bruce retired from AK Steel and enjoyed many activities.  He was very active in his church, Fellowship Baptist, and was one of the founders of the church. He was known to have quite a collection of clocks.  He enjoyed woodworking and his dogs, loved music, often listening to the BBN Christian radio station; loved to garden and enjoyed his flowers, and also picked up a love for tying knots, a pastime he learned from his navy days.  Bruce was also one who loved to shop at thrift stores and the family had great fun with him regarding his “dumpster diving” days.  He even received a “Bruce-O-Matic” to help him with his “diving” expeditions.  It was a special device made just for him and had its own special certificate.  He was known for starting and finishing projects; a man of completing tasks.  Of all his endeavors, the most meaningful one to Bruce was that he was a soul winner for Jesus.  He loved the Lord, he loved his church, and he loved his family.

            Along with his wife, he is survived by four children, Phyllis J. (James) Smith of Mansfield, Joan L. (Randall) Kuhn of Sabetha, Kansas, John M. (Susan) Gruneisen of Dalton, Ohio, and V. Ann (John) Diamond of Beavercreek, Ohio; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

            Bruce was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and their wives, Jay Eldridge  (Millie) Gruneisen and Robert (Dorothy) Gruneisen; and one sister and brother-in-law, Iona (Clyde) Swank.

            Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the funeral home with calling hours one hour prior. Pastor Randy Raynes of Fellowship Baptist Church will officiate.  Burial will follow in Caesarean Cemetery, Mansfield-Washington Road, Mansfield.

Barbara A. Card Dill

                

             Barbara A. Card Dill, 67, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a brief illness.

            Barbara was born April 24, 1944 in Dunkirk, New York to Lawrence E. and Alice M. (Albright) Card.  She had retired from MedCentral Hospital and was a member of the Moose Lodge #341 Women of the Lodge.  Barbara had numerous hobbies, including doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, and working with flowers.  For many years she enjoyed fishing, golfing, and camping.  She also had a deep love for her animal friends, Tippy, Chance, Carmel and Simba.

            She is survived by her son, William “Bill” Dill of Mansfield; two brothers, Theodore (Maureen) Card of Jamestown, New York, and Sidney Card of Warren, Pennsylvania; and one sister, Judy Sage of Mansfield.

            Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband, Willard Dill, on April 1, 2006; and two infant sons.

 Mary V. Mathews Zornes

            Mary V. Mathews Zornes, 73, of Mansfield, passed away at home following a lengthy illness.

            Mary was born December 29, 1937 in Banks, Alabama to Joe T. and Cora (McLendon) Mathews.  She had worked for many years at Mansfield Aircraft and Product Company (MAPCO), and enjoyed watching birds out of her front window.  She also enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians, and had two special pets, Sheba her cat, and Harley her dog.  One of her favorite activities was napping on the couch, but her biggest joy came from family gatherings, especially cookouts and visiting her family in Alabama.

            She is survived by her husband, James Zornes; three children, Lloyd (Debra) Zornes, Michael (Karen Bias) Zornes, and Cora Mae Harless, all of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Christopher (Vickie) Zornes and Gregory Allen Zornes, all of Mansfield; and five great-grandchildren, Jenna Wright, Brianna Zornes, Angel Zornes, Robbie McCoy all of Mansfield, and Danielle McCoy of Columbus.

            Mary was preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Joseph Wade Harless; and six siblings, Hilda Dennis, Joe Mathews, Charles Mathews, Glen Mathews, Betty Mathews, and Norma Mathews.

            Calling hours will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD, 1106 Park Ave. East (the former American Legion Post 16).  A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor C. Earl Tackett officiating.

 

 

 Nancy L. (Smith) Cole

            Nancy L. (Smith) Cole, 70, of Bellville, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a lengthy illness.

            Nancy was born January 13, 1941 in Mansfield to Frank L and Leona V. (Daugherty) Smith.  Nancy enjoyed working at Daugherty’s Restaurant and Hitchman’s Market over the years.  She also enjoyed caring for her elderly friends and family.  Nancy was known for her love of playing cards at the Butler Adult Center and had just as much passion for playing bingo.  She also enjoyed cooking and baking, listening to country music, going to parades, going out to eat with friends, enjoying her great-grandbabies, and driving all over creation to enjoy Christmas lights.  The biggest challenge was trying to decide which of her passions was her favorite!

            She is survived by two sons, Mark Cole of Bellville and James (Helen) Cole of Wooster; four granddaughters, Samantha Kurtz, Bethaney Steward, Hailey Fultz, and Cheyenne Cole; two grandsons, Matthew Cole and Cody Fultz; two great-granddaughters, four great-grandsons; and eight siblings.

            Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, and one nephew.

The family will have a memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life at a later date.

 

 

 

 Carolyn S. Ross Surber Brewster

            Carolyn S. Ross Surber Brewster, 74, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011, following a brief illness.

            Carolyn was born May 15, 1937 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky to Rollie and Flora (Puckett) Ross.  She had worked at Mansfield General Hospital in pediatrics and x-ray and also had worked at Winchester Nursing Home.  Carolyn enjoyed playing games and doing puzzles with her family and friends and was an avid reader.

            She is survived by two children, Ernie (Elaine) Surber and Terri Gilbert both of Mansfield; eight grandchildren, Kevin McGonigal, Connie Hill, Carrie Hamm, Susan Salaiz, Michael Gilbert, Jr., Ernie Surber, Mark Surber, and Emma Surber; 20 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donnie (Betty) Ross, Paul (Miranda) Ross, and Charles Ross all of Kentucky; six sisters, Orine (James) Mattax of Mississippi, Laverne (Sam) Murphy, Wanda Ross, Agnes (Holly) Poland, and Brenda (Otto) Compton, all of Kentucky, and Gail (Ben) Coker of Florida; one surviving brother-in-law, William Stuchell of Illinois; three surviving sisters-in-law, Velma Ross of Kentucky, Francis Ross of South Carolina, and Jan Ross of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

            Along with her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, George Surber; one daughter, Donna McGonigal; six brothers, Chalmer Ross, Linville Ross, Denzel Ross, Woodford Ross, Ray Ross, and Bob Ross; and two sisters, Maxine Stuchell and Imogene Cox.

            The family will observe private services. Arrangements are being handled by Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (St. Rt. 430E), Mansfield.

Willie “James” Johnson

             

            Willie “James” Johnson, April 15, 1937 – December 10, 2011 (74), of Mansfield, passed away peacefully at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio following a short illness.

            James was born to the late Ephron and Rosie Mae (Feagin) Johnson in Andalusia, Alabama.  He was one of eight siblings and the beloved husband of his loving, devoted wife, Helen (Walker) Johnson, for over 54 years.  He was resided in Mansfield for 59 years, had been employed at Humphries for 23 years as a machine operator, and had retired from General Motors after 27 years of service.  

            James will forever be remembered by his beloved children, Sandra (John) Bentley from Mansfield, Vanessa (Leroy) Butler of Mansfield, Warren (Teresa) Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida, Corey (Angie) Johnson of Shelbyville, Indiana, Luada Todd of Mansfield, and Bobby Black of Memphis, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two loving sisters, Cleaster (Eddie) Rayner of Mansfield and Minnie (George) Norris of Columbus; one brother, Daniel (Irene) Johnson; a special “brother”, Parker (Clasy) Jackson of Mansfield; one aunt, Neter Pearl (Feagin) Brooks of Mansfield; special cousins, Ben Williams, Elder Aaron Williams, and Lawrence Feagin; a host of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Delmar Milner, Donnie Hoard, and Bobby Clark; and other family and friends whom were blessed to know him.

James loved cooking and eating (fish, baked chicken, etc.), enjoyed being with his family.  His biggest joy came from his grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved to spend time with.  He enjoyed listening to music (blues), laughing and hanging out with his friends.  James touched the lives of many people.  He was a proud, hardworking man, who took care of his family.                                                                     

            James was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Evelyn Hawthorne, Sarah Johnson, and Mary Cheatham; one brother, Frennie Ray Johnson; and one son-in-law, Carlos Todd.

            Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Maddox Memorial COGIC, 1148 Walker Lake Road, Mansfield.  Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Elder Aaron Williams officiating.  Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. 

   A repass will follow at UAW #549, W. 4th Street, Mansfield.

Janice Ann Dickerson Ivy

            Janice Ann (Dickerson) Ivy, 74, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, November 29, 2011.

            Janice was born November 20, 1937 in Butler to Walter Price and Vivian Marie (Moore) Dickerson.  She was a member of Christ Gospel Church.

            She is survived by her children, Vivian Bell of Mansfield, Mike (Brenda) Ivy of Columbus, Tim (Susie) Ivy of Lexington, and Bryian Ivy of Sandy Hill, Kentucky; grandchildren, Willie Bell, Devonna Murphy, Dawn Kanz, Heather, Chante’, Cheyenne, Adam, and Joshua Ivy, Nathaniel and Allen Young, Shaleah Mullens, Brandon, Breonna, and Alicia Ivy; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

            Along with her husband, Malvin Eugene Ivy, who passed away in 1991, Janice was preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel Kennard and Lucille Dickerson; brother, Bob Dickerson; son, Melvin L. Ivy; and daughter, Tonya L. Young.

            Private services will be observed by the family.

Jaylene Starlet Ward

            Jaylene Starlet Ward, 31, of Shelby, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, November 26, 2011 at her home.

            Jaylene was born March 25, 1980 in Mansfield, Ohio to Jason Lavern Ward and the late Patricia G. Gorman Tackett.  She enjoyed spending time with her daughter.

            She is survived by her daughter, Diamond Meister; her father, Jason (Karen) Ward of Bellville; two sisters, Roshella Tackett Shearon of Florida and Glenda Thompson (Gail Keeton) of Shelby; and one brother, Keith (Dawn) Ward of Mansfield; maternal uncles, Kenneth Gorman and Larry Gorman both of Mansfield; numerous nieces and nephews; one great niece, Pruedance, with whom she had a special bond; and the father of her daughter, Jeff Meister.

            Jaylene was preceded in death by her mother; one brother, Kevin Ward; maternal grandmother, Gaythel Hensley; maternal grandfather, William Gorman; and paternal grandparents, Glen and Julia Ward.

Craig William Holt

            Craig William Holt, 61, of Mansfield, went to be with his heavenly Father Monday, November 28, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.

            Craig was born May 22, 1950 in Sacramento, California to John and Vera (Johnson) Holt.  After graduation from La Sierra High School, he received a degree in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.  He furthered his education by completing law school at Western State University in San Diego, California and enjoyed practicing law in Billings, Montana for many years.  Craig had a love for adventure throughout his life and had many passions including sailing, cooking, and the spirit of the old west.  He loved to spend time on the open road on his Harley Davidson and had a great generosity for others.  Craig will be forever loved and greatly missed.

            Craig, a strong man of faith, is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Lorrie Holt.  Together they had two daughters, Janet Holt and Sarah (Jay) Miller.  One of Craig’s greatest joys was the love of his five grandchildren, Michaela, Connor, Kylie, Jake, and Quinn Miller.  He is also survived by his parents; one sister, Shelia (Denny) Cunningham; and two brothers, Steve (Judy) Holt and Bryan (Sharon) Holt.

            A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2011 at CitiChurch, Bellville, with Pastor Micah Pelkey officiating. 

            In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the family to help his wife during this difficult time.

 

 

 

Robert Britton Quicksall

            Robert Britton Quicksall, 70, of Perrysville, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2011 at his home following a lengthy illness.

            Robert was born May 2, 1941 in Mansfield to the late Robert William Quicksall and Betty Arline (Kissel) Quicksall Brown.  He proudly served his country in the US Navy during VietNam Era and was a member of the VFW Post 3494 and Moose Lodge #341.  Robert enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, especially fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

            He is survived by one daughter, Jodi Glasener of Mansfield; one granddaughter, Nicole Glasener; two great grandchildren; one brother, Ronnie Quicksall of Mansfield; and one sister, Linda Fenton of Mansfield.

            Robert is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Terry Quicksall; and step-brother, Marvin Brown.

            Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2011 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (former American Legion Bldg.), Mansfield.  Funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. with Pastor Dale V.  Rufus “Neal” Atherton, II

            Rufus “Neal” Atherton, II, 64, of Perrysville, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2011 at MedCentral Hospital following a lengthy illness.

            Neal was born on February 12, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Rufus N., I and Francis E. (Brogan) Atherton.  He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the VietNam Era.  He worked as a supervisor at Shiloh Corporation for over 25 years, was a farmer and a member of the Mason Venus Lodge #0152.  Neal enjoyed playing his drums, fishing, and farming.  He especially loved his tractors and any thing that was Native American and enjoyed traveling to many places with his wife, especially The Smokey Mountains.        

            Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife, Cindy Atherton; four children, Stacy (Jeff) McQuerrey of Galion, Neal Jay Atherton of Perrysville, Rebecca (Timothy) Shoup of Mansfield, and Joshua (Jen) Nolen of Akron; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Patrick, and Alan Robertson, Jessica, Heather, and Melissa Atherton, and Jackson and Jenna Nolen; three sisters, Barbara (Tom) Jump of Akron, Doris (Floyd) McIntire of Perrysville, and Becky (Phil) Cooper of Ashland; one brother, Ray (Gwen) Dingus of Butler; his mother-in-law, Glenna Thompson; and his former mother-in-law, Georgetta Au. 

            Neal is preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Au Atherton; his father; and his father-in-law, Jesse Au.

David M. Calderhead

            David M. Calderhead, 74, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at MedCentral Hospital following a brief illness.

            David was born October 30, 1937 in Asheville, North Carolina to David O. and Ages M. (Macfarlane) Calderhead.  He was born again on July 7, 1948, accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Savior while attending the Blue Ridge Bible Camp in North Carolina.  He attended Mansfield Senior High School, served his country in the US Marine Corps, and retired from Fisher Body after 30 years of employment.  He was an active member of the local UAW for many years.

            He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, David C. and Barbara Calderhead of Milford, James W. “Will” and Kris Calderhead of Pickerington, and Chip Calderhead of Mansfield; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Hoffman of Mansfield.

            David was preceded in death by a twin sister, Anna Cunningham; and a brother, James Calderhead.

            A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. December 9, 2011 at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 536 Kentucky Avenue, Mansfield.

Jodi Joann Smithberger

            Jodi Joann Smithberger, 50, of Mansfield, passed away at Riverside Hospital in Columbus on Friday, November 18, 2011, following a lengthy illness.

            Jodi was born on September 9, 1961, in Chicago Illinois.  Jodi loved to cook and often times had recipes hanging on the refrigerator.  She enjoyed going to cookouts and family activities, gardening, and growing flowers. 

            Along with her father and step-mother, Bernard Eugene and Donna (Burns)     Smithberger, she is survived by two children, Brian (Beth) Eugene Smithberger of Urbana and Jonathan Robert Smithberger of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Brian Eugene Smithberger, II and Latasia Fields; and one brother, Jeff (Cheryl Frietchen) Smithberger.

            Jodi was preceded in death by her adopted mother, June Ann Myers Smithberger; one sister, Betty Vollmer; and one brother, James Wray.

Ruth Elnora Waefler Schmidt

            

          Ruth Elnora Waefler Schmidt, 96, of Mansfield, passed away Friday, November 18, 2011 following a brief illness.

            Ruth was born September 23, 1915 in Mansfield to Andrew and Sarah J. (Hawk) Waefler.  She married Arthur Schmidt on November 1, 1934 and together they owned Schmidt Hardware and Toyland and later owned Lucas Hardware for 25 years.  Ruth was a selfless and loving person, who loved to cook and always seemed to have family and friends over for a meal.  She loved animals and was known to collect a few strays over the years, even befriending opossums and raccoons.  She enjoyed raising houseplants and flowers, and for many years served at St. Marks Lutheran Church as a pianist, organist, and Sunday School Teacher.  Ruth was a member of Grace Bible Church in Lucas for 25 years and attended Open Bible Church in Mansfield.

            She is survived by three children, Lodean (Gene) Baker of Mansfield, Diane (Larry) Tilton of Lucas, and Dr. Wayne (Terri Miller) Schmidt of Ashland; one daughter-in-law, Suzanah Schmidt of Harbor Springs, MI;  12 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; and special cousins, Enid and Bill Reis.

            Along with her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband in 1987, and one son, Lowell R. Schmidt.

 Hazel M. Murphy Draper

            Hazel M. Murphy Draper, 54, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2011 following a lengthy illness.

            Hazel was born on March 3, 1957 in Mansfield to Ronnie T. and Shirley (Tormaschy) Murphy.  Hazel enjoyed playing bingo and cards, and enjoyed watching TV.

            She is survived by three daughters, Tina Dixon and Farrah Long, both of Mansfield, and Katherine Mullins of Florida; five grandchildren; one sister, Ronna Thompson of Mansfield; and one brother, Greg Davis of Missouri.

            Hazel was preceded in death by her parents.

Lawrence “Larry” Gross

            Lawrence “Larry” Gross, 67, of Shiloh, passed away Monday, November 7, 2011 following an extended illness.

            Larry was born September 6, 1944 in Lima to Effie and Fred Haggard and was later adopted and reared by Earl and Avis (Lee) Gross.  He owned and operated his own barber shop for forty years, was a member of the Mansfield FOPA Lodge No. 70, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

            He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Gross; six children, Bob (Angela) Cooper, Lonny (Beth) Gross, Nanette (Jerry) Coon, Angie (Jack) Keogh, Rachelle (Russell) Ward, and Trilina Fife; sixteen grandchildren, Roger (Jamie) Cooper, Kelly (Justin) Stephens, Aaron (Michelle) Cooper, Andrea (Steve) Orewiler, Tawni Lee, Travis Cooper, Gage Cooper, Nathan and Justin Gross, Megan Goon, Christi and Brody Ward, Ethan and Sonya Bargo, and Breauna and Dustin Fife; nine great grandchildren, Kalob, Carly, Daylin, Jaylann, Greyson, Ethan, Audrey, Faith, and Connor; and one brother, Rick Haggard.

            Larry was preceded in death by his biological parents, adoptive parents, and one brother, George Haggard.

Daniel Kelley Anderson

            Daniel Kelley Anderson, 62, of Ashland, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness.

            Daniel was born March 30, 1949 in Ashland County, the son of Mary and Bill Anderson.  He was a 1967 graduate of Ashland High School and proudly served his country during the Viet Nam Era as a Green Beret Pvt E-1 Demolition Expert in the U.S. Army.  Daniel also attended Mansfield Business College from 1976 to 1978 and was a Timken Retiree after 30 years of service as a computer programmer.  He was a member of Vermillion Baptist Church, an avid hunter and fisherman, a carpenter, and a loving family man, who will be greatly missed.

            He leaves behind his loving wife, Sheila (Neff) Anderson; five children, Julie Collins of Lakeland, Florida, Doug Anderson of Ashland, Daniel (Heidi) Anderson of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Heather (Craig) Conner of Perrysville, and Michael (Darlis) Lewis of Mansfield; eight grandchildren, Taylor Collins, Mehgan Collins, Madelyn Anderson, Hannah Conner, Presley Lewis, Evelyn Anderson, Austin Conner, and Nathan Conner; his mother, Mary Kelley Anderson; four siblings, Bill Anderson of Thailand, Sally (Don) Stover of Lakeland, Florida, Jim (Sherry) Anderson of West Salem, and Cindy Litton of Ashland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

            Daniel was preceded in death by his father, Bill Anderson.

            A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Vermillion Baptist Church, 1005 County Road 2256, Perrysville, with Pastor Jim Luedeman officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

 JoAnn Brinegar Kiser

              

            JoAnn Brinegar Kiser, 76, of Mansfield, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

            JoAnn was born October 4, 1935 in Olive Hill, Kentucky to McKinley and Delia (Jones) Brinegar.  She was a homebody, who loved being a housewife, liked to draw, and enjoyed taking care of her grandkids.

            She is survived by one son, Stephen and LeeAnn Kiser of Mansfield; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one brother, Ora Brinegar.

            Along with her husband, William Kiser, Jr., who passed away in 1999, JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Leroy Brinegar and Earl Brinegar; and three sisters, Christine Sparks, Pauline Duncan, and Elizabeth Culp.

Carl Lee Henderson

            Carl Lee Henderson, 75, of Mansfield, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness.

            Carl was born January 3, 1936 in Rowan County, Kentucky to Russell and Dovie Mae (Ham) Henderson.  He married Jackie Curry on February 23, 1991 and attended Dean Road Freewill Baptist Church.  Carl enjoyed fishing, spending time in the garden, keeping his yard pretty, and in his earlier years was an avid hunter.  He especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

            Along with his wife, Jackie Henderson, Carl is survived by three daughters, Polly (Mitchell) Mosier of Ontario, Brenda (Jamie) Rhodes of Sterling, and Anastasia Curry, who lives at home; five grandchildren, Jenifer, Jeremy, Becca, Aelissya, and Malachi; two great grandchildren, David Mavrik and Kayli Rain; two brothers, Joe Henderson and Sherman Henderson both of Mansfield; one sister, Dessie (Rob) Jones of Mansfield.

            Carl was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Tillie Yvonne Henderson; daughter, Kimberly Henderson; two brothers, Ivan Henderson and Isaac Henderson; and one sister, Inez Hall.

Vernon Dyer

            Vernon Dyer, 76, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, October 27, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

            Vernon was born June 18, 1935 in Island Fork, Kentucky to Greer and Dorothy (Humphries) Dyer.  He was a retired line worker from General Motors and enjoyed reading his Bible, going to church, and spending time with his family and friends.

            He is survived by six children, Wilbur Dyer, Karen Dyer of Ashland, Vernon Dyer, Jr. of Pensacola, Florida, Jennifer Bolton of Willard, Elizabeth Dyer of Worthington, and Regina Dyer of Charlotte, North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Delores Drake of Shiloh, Carma Cook of Shelby, and Christine Drake of Wallingford, Kentucky.

            Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Louise Davis Dyer; his parents; and two brothers, Richard F. Dyer and Curtis Roth.

 Sandra Jean Hipp

             “A Mother’s heart is a patchwork of love.”  Sandra Jean Hipp, 70, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 22, 2011, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a courageous battle with an extended illness. 

            Sandra was born April 10, 1941 to Henry and Marjorie (Gross) Lane in Mansfield.  She enjoyed creating memories and special moments with her husband, children, and grandchildren.  Some of her favorite past-times were camping and vacationing with her family and taking her grandchildren along newspaper routes while working for the Mansfield News Journal.  She was known for her generosity and devotion to caring for her family.  A Christian, she loved the Lord and attended Hannah Road Church of God; and was employed for numerous years at DCS and Mansfield News Journal.

            Sandra is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 37 years, Richard Wayne Hipp; four children, son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Dana Page, daughter and son-in-law, Dee Dee and Paul Lee, daughter, Robin Craig, son, Eric Oney and his girlfriend, Dina, all of Mansfield; ten grandchildren, Tabby (Roger) Lyons, Chad (Erin) Page, Touby Page, Amanda (Tim) Parsons, Josh (Katie) Lee, Amber Page, Hope Brady, Jade Page, Felicia Page, and Jamie

Sparks; and ten great-grandchildren.

            Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Page and brother, Michael Lane.

Frank Ray Oswalt

Frank Ray Oswalt, 66, of Mansfield, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011 while in the care of Crystal Care Center.

            Frank was born May 27, 1945 in Mansfield to the late Ray L. and Agnes R. (Hedrick) Oswalt.  He married Ethel Hall on October 1, 1963 and attended Holiness Church.  Frank enjoyed playing music and spending time with his dogs.

            Along with his wife of 48 years, Ethel Oswalt, he is survived by three children, Frank Oswalt, Jr., Brenda Taylor, and Cheryl Shoemaker all of Mansfield; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Carol (Gary) Bays of Mansfield and Sandra Gee of South Carolina

            Frank was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

 Ronald Riggenbach

            Ronald Riggenbach, 78, of Mansfield, passed away early Friday morning, October 21, 2011 following an extended illness.

            Ronald was born December 12, 1932 in Mansfield to Alvin F. and Elda (Hilty) Riggenbach.  He proudly served his country in the Army and the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a retired mechanic of Empire Reeves Steel Mill.   He married LeeAnn Hamrick on November 2, 1952.  He enjoyed taking trips, riding his motorcycle, working on cars, and was a “horse trader” for cars.  Ronald liked his coffee breaks, loved his coffee and ice cream.  His best buddy was his dog, Spencer.

            Along with his wife, he is survived by six children, Kerry (Sheila) Riggenbach of Marion, Craig A. (Rhonda) Riggenbach of Mansfield, Ronna (Randy) Branham of Cincinnati, Bret (Martie) Riggenbach of Sarasota, Florida, Janna Blakely of Mansfield, and Mark (Donna) Riggenbach of Mansfield; sixteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; one brother, Duane (Jackie) Riggenbach of Mansfield; two sisters, Betty Florence of Mansfield and Diane Sutliff of Delaware; and one sister-in-law, Helen Riggenbach of Mansfield.

            Ronald was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Riggenbach.

 Joseph Lamont Valdry

            Joseph Lamont Valdry, 58, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 11, 2011.

            Joseph was born February 14, 1953 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late Val and Helen Marie (Fowler) Valdry.  He attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church and enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and listening to music.

            He is survived by four children, Joselyn Valdry of West Virginia, Joseph Valdry, II, Helen Valdry, and Matthew Valdry all of Mansfield; two grandchildren; step mother, Sarah Valdry of Mansfield; two sisters, Marie Chambers of Carrolton, Texas and Sharon Valdry of Mansfield; paternal aunts, Mildred Washington and Christine Valdry; maternal aunt, Eloise Pigott; maternal uncles, Julius (Roberta) Pigott and B. J. Pigott; and a host of cousins and nephews.

            Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

            Family and friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m.  Monday, October 24, 2011 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield.  A memorial service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Father Tom McQuillen officiating.

 

 

Alan Russell Kessler

            Alan Russell Kessler, 64, of Mansfield, passed away Monday, October 17, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following an extended illness.

            Alan was born December 29, 1946 in Beckley, West Virginia to Lamar S. and Tosca V. (Simmons) Kessler.  He served in the U. S. Army during the Viet Nam Era and retired from HiStat.  He married George Ann Davis on August 10, 1991.  Alan acted in “The Shawshank Redemption” as “Laundry Bob”.  He belonged to the PT Cruiser Car Club “BUS” of Springfield, Ohio and enjoyed showing off his car. 

            Along with his wife, George Ann Kessler, he is survived by two children, Jason (Johanna) Kessler of Richmond, Virginia and Heather Kessler of Marion; four step children, Steve Fetz of Marion, Indiana, Terrie Ann (Pete) Griggs of Charlottesville, Virginia, Jack (Leah) Forst of Gloucester, Virginia, and Kathryn (Sammy) Larrimore of Gloucester, Virginia; six grandchildren, Bryson, Shelby, and Joshua Fisher, Danny Combs, Joseph and Julie Anna Kessler; ten step grandchildren, James and Jarrett Larrimore, Amber and Alex Griggs, Collin Forst, Steven M., James, Courtney, Steven J., and Terrance Fetz; eight step great grandchildren; his mother, Tosca Kessler; and two brothers, Greg Kessler and Randy Kessler.

            Alan was preceded in death by his father, Lamar Kessler; and nephew, Aaron Kessler.

Kathe “Boss” Gongwer

           Kathe “Boss” Gongwer, 58, of Mansfield, passed away early Thursday morning, October 13, 2011, following a lengthy illness.

            Boss was born November 24, 1952 in Ashland, Ohio to Clayton Gongwer and Judy Echelberger Gongwer Harrell.  Boss’s early education was through Applecreek.  She was known to be full of life and entertainment; was always so happy and witty, enjoyed life to the fullest, and had so many friends!   Boss loved Elvis, and always said how much she loved men.  Her “wedding” is still a happy memory to her friends.  For many years she attended Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church on Laver Road.

            Along with her mother, she is survived by her stepfather, Walter Harrell; one sister, Samantha “Sam” (Craig) Cardiman of Trappe, Pennsylvania; her MANY friends at the McElvain Homes; and her special friend (“husband”), Doug Hergatt.  

            She was preceded in death by her father.

Delores Jean Lambert Webb

            Delores Jean Lambert Webb, 76, of Mansfield, went to be with the Lord following a two year battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 while surrounded by her loving family.

            Delores was born July 1, 1935 in Aflax, Kentucky to the late Charles and Clara (Wilson) Lambert.  She married James Webb on March 31, 1956.  Delores was a member of Taylortown Community Church in Shelby for over 50 years.  She enjoyed gardening, spending time at church, and most importantly, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

            Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (John) Kiser of Ontario and Patty (Mickie) Arnett of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Jeremy (Kera) Kiser, Justin Kiser, Jamie Arnett, Chelsea Kiser, and Andrew Arnett; five great grandchildren, Jena Kiser, Brendan Kiser, Gracie Kiser, and twins, Jazmin and Jayden Kiser; seven siblings, Robert (Ruth) Lambert of Bluefield, Virginia, William (Yvonne) Lambert of Mansfield, Ruth (Fred) Lamb of Peebles, Ohio, Richard (Barbara) Lambert of Mansfield, James Lambert of Omega, Ohio, Linda (Jerry) Pennington of Ft. Gay, West Virginia, and Pamela (Paul) Salmons of Webbville, Kentucky; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; many special friends; and her church family.

            Delores was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Helen Lambert; and one grandson, Jarod Arnett.

Ray J. Ledbetter

            Ray J. Ledbetter, 85, of Mansfield passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011 while in the care of Mifflin Care Center.

            Ray was born June 27, 1926 to Winton W. and Eva Mae (Holmes) Ledbetter. 

            He is survived by two brothers, Walter Ledbetter of Texas and James M. Ledbetter of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Trula M. Allen of Jacksonville, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

            Ray was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Thumas, Roscoe, and Claude; and four sisters, Hester, Pauline, Hazel, and Christine.

            A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Mifflin Care Center.  Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 13, 2011 in Mansfield Cemetery. 

 

 

 

James A. Black

        

            James A. Black, 53, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

            James was born October 21, 1957 in Mansfield to the late James and Luada Black.  He belonged to a support group with NAACP and enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, and being with his family.

            He is survived by one son, James Haynes of Mansfield; three sisters, Helen (Willie J.) Johnson of Mansfield, Myrtle K. Black of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Sherry Y. Black of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of nieces and nephews; special cousin, Sylvia Davis; and caregivers, Venessa Butler, Vowana Butler, and Sandwana Nelms.

            Along with his parents, James was preceded in death by one sister, Charlotte Ann Birchfield; and one daughter, Myisha Haynes.

Ruby J. Belcher Keith

            Ruby Joanne Belcher Keith, 79, of Shelby, passed away Friday, September 30, 2011 following a lengthy illness.

            Ruby was born June 15, 1932 in Clendenin, West Virginia to Ira W. and Goldie F. (Mullins) Belcher.  She was a member of the Church of God and enjoyed sewing and doing crafts.

            She is survived by three sons, Dale Keith of Shelby, Dave Keith  of Mansfield, and Dennis Keith of Degraff; many grandchildren; one brother, Conard Belcher of Pomeroy; and three sisters, Arminda Bishop of Somerville, West Virginia, Peggy Kerestes of Mansfield, and Delores Stover of Emery, Texas.

            Along with her husband, Lacy Keith, Ruby was preceded in death by one daughter, DeAnna Lowe; one son, Daniel “Red” Keith; one grandson, Dave Keith, Jr.; and one sister, Veda Evans.

 LeRoy H. “Mac” McFadden

            LeRoy H. “Mac” McFadden, 90, of Mansfield, passed away on September 22, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness.

            Mac was born on April 27, 1921 in Ashland, Ohio to Kenneth H. and Elvera Peterson McFadden.  He was a veteran of WWII serving his country in the United States Navy.  He was a farmer and also employed at Richland Auto Parts, retiring in May, 1986.  On December 3, 1944, he married his sweetheart, Frances L. Kirsch McFadden, who survives.  Mac was a member of the Oakland Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau, and the American Legion Post #503.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, farming, basketball, taking care of his sheep, mushroom hunting, and he especially loved to talk!  He loved his family and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to him.

            Along with his wife, he is survived by four children, Sharon (Elwyn) Niebel of Mansfield, Harvey McFadden of Mansfield, George (Renee) McFadden of Perrysville, and Patricia (Rick) Love of Mansfield; 18 grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Francisco, Kevin (Stacie) Niebel, Jody (Rob) Krumlaw, Wendy (Philip) Atwell, Matthew (Allison) McFadden, Mark (Page) McFadden, Caleb (Lindsey) McFadden, Seth (Jalon) McFadden, Tina McFadden, Chad (Heather) McFadden, Joshua (Stacy) McFadden, Natalie (Samuel) Popiel, Nicole McFadden, Nathanial McFadden, Gwendolyn McFadden, Amy McFadden, Jedidiah McFadden, and Anthony (Vanna) Dulin; 31 great-grandchildren and one on the way; one brother-in-law, Blake (Joan) Kirsch; one sister-in-law, Mary Kirsch; numerous nieces and nephews; and close family friends, Jim (Jan) Rakestraw.

            Mac was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond McFadden;  one sister, Clara Tuttle; and one brother-in-law, David Kirsch.

Alton “Dick” L. Markley

            Alton “Dick” L. Markley, 90 of Mansfield, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, following a lengthy illness.

            Dick was born on August 25, 1921, in Bellwood, PA, to Josiah and Etta Hostler Markley.  He served his country in the United States Army Airforce during WWII.  He had a story about his service published in the News Journal on March 24, 2008. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross during his service to his country.  Dick retired from General Motors and was a member of the VFW Post 9943, American Legion Post 16, 40 & 8, and Leiderkrantz.  He enjoyed bowling, golfing and flying.  He previously held a pilot’s license.  He also enjoyed riding his bike and would take long trips through the countryside of England while he was in the service, and later years, when he would make long trips from home.

            Dick is survived by his bride, Jeanne Schoner Markley, with whom he wed on July 23, 1946.  Also surviving are two children, Richard Markley of Bellville and Linda (Bob) Zook of Mansfield; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Dana) Zook, Marcie (Tim) Jacobs, Aaron Markley, and Nicole (Gautam) Bagchi; two  great-grandchildren, Ian Bagchi, and Alec Bagchi, and one on the way; and one sister, Mardell (Ed) Garber of Altoon, PA.

            Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald Markley and William Markley.

James P. “Phil” Riner

            James P.  “Phil” Riner, 62, of Lucas, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011, at Mansfield MedCentral, following a brief illness. 

            Phil was born on June 16, 1949, in Shelbyville, TN, to Joe B. and Nerene Haislip Riner.  He was employed as a truck driver. Phil enjoyed woodworking and loved to make things with his hands.  He was also an avid Pittsburg Steelers fan. 

            Along with his mother, he is survived by five children; Phillip Shane Riner, Tammy (Mitchell) Reed and Lynn (Kyle) Lewter all of Petersburg, TN, Deetra (Jamison) Adkins of Ontario, and Melisa (Ken) Watt of Lucas;  six siblings, Carol Williams of Wartrace, TN, Joe (Janie) Riner of Mansfield, Bill (Nora) Riner of Shelbyville, TN, Ted Riner of Lewisburg, TN, Johnny (Jane) Riner of Shelbyville, TN, and Nancy Townsend of Toronto, Canada; twelve grandchildren, Nathan Riner, Susan Bowen, Ginger Reed, Skyler Lewter, Shelby Lewter, Shaylee Lewter, Jade Adkins, Jamison Adkins, Jordana Adkins, Harley Watt, Kelsey Watt, and Bradley Watt;  three great-grandchildren, Kimerson and Keegan Chaney and Kale Lewter.

            He was preceded in death by his father.

 Edna Louise Cole Carroll

            Edna Louise Cole Carroll, 77, of Lucas, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Cleveland Clinic following an extended illness.

            Edna was born February 25, 1934 in Carter County, Kentucky to William Mitchell and Virgie Hazel (Dean) Cole.  She was a member of the Eastern Star in Shelby.  Edna enjoyed quilting, cooking, baking, collecting and making dolls, and gardening vegetables and flowers.  She loved her family and will be sadly missed by them all.

            She is survived by her loving husband, Ersel Carroll of Lucas; six children, Allen Hollar of Canton, Wilma (Roger) Steward of Bellville, Susan Hollar of Lucas, Sherry Swank of Mansfield, Jennifer (David) Neighbors of Bellville, and Crystel (David) Smith of Bellville; seven grandchildren, Keith (Beth) Williams, Nathan (Trisha) Williams, Michelle (Scott) Blum, Travis Thompson, Brittany (James) Haynes, Angel Goldsmith, and Drake Goldsmith; thirteen great grandchildren, Keith, Trent, Noell, Gabriel, Winter, Eliyah, Caleb, Emma, Isaiah, Tyler, Trever, Autumn, and McKenna; three step grandchildren, Brian Steward, Brad (Stacy) Steward, and Bret (Lori) Steward; eleven step great grandchildren, Kayla, Brandon, Brittany, Korissa, Ashley, Jacob, Hannah, Brandy, Bret, Morgan, and Isaiah; one sister, Martha Phillips of Shelby; three brothers, Eugene (June) Cole, Wade (Nancy) Cole, and Clayton (Sharon) Cole all of Mansfield; one sister-in-law, Helen Cole of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sherrill Preston Spurlock, “Jr.”

            Sherrill Preston Spurlock, “Jr.”, 53, of Mansfield, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family, friends, and special friend, Pastor Keith, on Thursday, September 15, 2011, while in the care of Hospice of North Central Ohio, following a courageous battle with cancer.

            Born to the late Sherrill P. Spurlock, Sr. and Irene Wolfe on September 24, 1957 in Tiffin, Ohio.  Jr. grew up in the Bucyrus area, was a longtime resident of Mansfield, where he worked 26 years at Artesian/Crane Plumbing, and was a devoted union member of the I.U.E. Local 719.

            He enjoyed the outdoors – fishing and cooking out on the grill.  He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and also enjoyed watching old Westerns.  His faith in the Lord became very strong as he spent much of his time reading the Bible.  He was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Ontario.  Jr. loved spending time with his family and will be sadly missed by them all.

            Jr. is survived by his bride of 32 years, Debra K. (Henderson) Spurlock, whom he married on January 31, 1979.  As they began their life together, they had three children, Crystal (Donald) Franks, Jimmy (Nicole) Spurlock, and Jeremy Spurlock all of Mansfield; three grandsons, Jayce, Jordan, and Grady, whom he adored and was known to them as “Pappy”.  He is also survived by his mother, Irene Wolfe of Mansfield; one sister, Connie Walcott of Arizona; one brother, Allen (Angie) Spurlock of Georgia; mother-in-law, Betty (Red) Henderson; brother-in-law, Daryl Henderson; sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Larry) Evans and Lisa (Rod) Mobley all of Mansfield; nieces and nephews, Kali, Kelsi, Makayla, Macy, Alyssa, Dalton, Heather, John, and Jill; as well as special aunts, uncles, and cousins.

            Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Sherrill Spurlock, Sr.; infant grandson, Jaylen Franks; father-in-law, James Henderson; grandfathers, Charles Applegate and Leslie Spurlock; and grandmother, Edith Spurlock.

 William “Billy” Lee Hahn

 

           William “Billy” Lee Hahn, 62, of Bowling Green, Ohio, passed away Monday, September 12, 2011 at the Veterans Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan following an extended illness.

            Bill was born August 9, 1949 in Mansfield to Richard and Patricia (O’Leary) Hahn who preceded him in death.  He graduated from St. Peter’s Catholic High School in 1967 and served in the U.S. Army (1968-1970) as a Legal Clerk during the Viet Nam Era.  Bill had numerous employment positions during his lifetime, but most recently in Bowling Green, Ohio.

            He is survived by his daughter, Darci (Nashon) Swan of Columbus; three grandchildren, Jordan, Erica, and Nashon, Jr.; three sisters, Barbara (Ron) Duncan of Denver, Colorado, Mary Jane Reip and Patricia (Lavern) Thompson both of Mansfield; four brothers, Charles Hahn of Mansfield, John (Beth) Hahn of Columbus, James (Virginia) Hahn of Mansfield, and Joseph (Pam) Hahn of Columbus; uncle, Tom Miller; aunt, Chris O’Leary; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Father Tom Leland of Perrysbury, Ohio.

            Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Timothy Hahn.

            A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 16, 2011 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Tom Leland officiating.  Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery with full military honors performed by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.

Richard L. Robson

            Richard L. Robson, 77, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.

            Richard was born June 24, 1934 in Radnor, Ohio to William E. and Isabelle E. (Kline) Robson.  He was a very hard worker and always made sure his family had what they needed.  He loved fishing, camping, and enjoyed all outdoor activities.  He worked for over 30 years at Peabody and Barnes in Galion.  Richard was married for 58 years to his loving wife, Wilma Jean Owens Robson, and she survives.

            Along with his wife, he is also survived by three children, Pamela K. (Richard) Conley, Ronald R. (Tina) Robson, and David L. (Debbie) Robson all of Mansfield; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford (Betty) Robson of New Philadelphia, Donald (Ginger) Robson of Mansfield, and David L. (Roxanne) Robson of Florida; one sister, Evelyn Robson Hasenzahl of Mansfield; and a very close friend, Rodney Mays and family.

            Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward H. Robson; and two sisters, Mary Robson Almendinger and Doris Robson VanDyke.

 Bernice “Darlene” Smith Martin

            Bernice “Darlene” Smith Martin, 64, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at her residence following an extended illness.

            Darlene was born May 16, 1947 in Ashland to George Henry and Ethel Marie (Cline) Smith.  She was a Bingo fanatic and loved to ride around Lake Erie.

            She is survived by her husband of thirty-six years, Ron Martin of Ashland; two children, Mary (Billy) Piatt of Ashland and Ron Martin, Jr. of Ashland; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and two brothers, George (Jean) Smith of Ashland and John (Debby) Smith of Mansfield.

            Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Jim Smith and Jerry Smith.

            A memorial service will held at a later date.

 

 

 Damaris L. Myers

                    

            Damaris L. Myers, 64, of Ontario, died unexpectedly Friday, September 2, 2011 as a result of a motorcycle accident in Galion.

            Damaris was born August 14, 1947 in Willard, Ohio to John F. and Arleen G. Hunter Swartz.  She was a member of Sar Shalom and a former member of Tabernacle of Praise in Leesville.  Damaris was employed for 25 years at United Telephone, Sprint and Embarq.  She loved dancing and had a passion for motorcycling.  On July 4, 2008, she married James Myers, who survives.

            Along with her husband, she is survived two sons, Damon Clemans of Juneau, Alaska and Dirwin (Chrisanta) Clemans of New Albany; one step-daughter, Kara Marie Myers of Bucyrus; and four brothers, David Swartz of Shiloh, Danny (Jaroon) Swartz of Humpty Doo, Australia, Dennis (Peggy) Swartz of Buda, Texas, and Duane Swartz of Van Buren, Missouri.

            Damaris was preceded in death by her parents.

            Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday September 8, 2011 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East (former American Legion Bldg.), Mansfield.  Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

 

 

Richard Bond

            Richard Bond, 64, of Mansfield passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield following a long illness.

            Mr. Bond was born in Mansfield on March 18, 1947 the son of the late Ralph J. and Dovie L. (nee Knipp) Bond.  He was a member of the Elm Street Free Will Baptist Church in Shelby.  He served in the U.S. army in the Vietnam War.  He was employed as a tow motor operator at A.K. Steel in Mansfield for 30 years, retiring in 1999.  Mr. Bond enjoyed collecting Hot Wheels cars and listening to blue grass music, and was a fan of singer George Jones.

            He is survived by a daughter, Dovie L. (Christopher) Beat of Mansfield; two sons, James Russell (Peggy) Bond of South Bend, IN and Brian K. (Amanda) Bond of Louisa, KY; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Melba (Dick) Windbigler of Mansfield; a brother, Ralph M. (Louise) Bond of Mansfield; and special friends Sharon Friend and Josie Gault.

            Mr. Bond was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Friend Bond, in 2002; and two brothers, Marvin Bond and Melvin Bond.

            Friends may call at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, 1106 Park Ave. East, (the former American Legion) on Tuesday, September 6 from 4:00-8:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the funeral home, with Pastor Wayne Castle officiating.  Burial will follow at Mansfield Cemetery.

            The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund, Elm Street Free Will Baptist Church, 41 Elm Street, Shelby, Ohio 44875.
